Course Outline

You may not own a pet but there may be times when you encounter a neighbor’s pet who “got out.” They are scared and possibly injured. How do you safely approach and deal with pet emergencies?

    • The role of first aid with your pet
    • Safety concerns for the provider
    • Preparing a pet first aid kit
  • Monitoring your pet
    • Understanding pet vital signs and how to measure them
    • Recognizing normal & abnormal behaviors
  • Illness
    • Vomiting and diarrhea
    • Bloat
    • Loss of appetite
    • Lethargy
    • Weakness or collapse
    • Seizures
    • Cold or heat exposure
    • Fever
    • Itchiness/scratching
  • Cardiovascular Emergencies
    • Recognizing the signs of cardiopulmonary arrest
    • Cat and dog CPR
  • Injuries
    • Bleeding
    • Temporary wound care, infection prevention
    • Lameness
    • Suspected fracture or spinal injury

    • Hit by car, fall from height, animal attack

Attendees will gain confidence and skills necessary to tend to unexpected pet emergencies until professional veterinary attention is acquired. Becoming pet first aid certified by an accredited organization sends your clients the message that you are not only a credible professional, but that you truly care about their cat or dog. Upon completion of the course, you earn a 2-year certification in pet first aid and are able to print a personal wall certificate verifying your completion of the course and listing the topics you’ve learned.
